Tomtom Go Messageboard

Maps map data is supplied on a little SD card that plugs in. Swapping these is dead easy but unless you're a mad keen amateur cartographer you'll have to wait for TomTom or their map supplier to issue the updated SD card.Posted by DaveNovember 28, 2004 Maps can the maps be updated say next year if you had major road changes in your area or do you have to wait for future updates fro tom tom.Posted by OutlanderNovember 28, 2004 Tomtom Go TOMTOM GO IS THE BEST PIECE OF KIT ON THE MARKET EASY TO USE AND WELL WORTH £400 POUND. Are The Maps Subscription Based All this GPS stuff is a bit new to me, so I am sorry if this sounds like a stupid question, but I just wanted to be sure before I take the plunge and buy. The UK maps that come with the Tom Tom - is it that I buy this once and thats it, there aren't any sort of annual subscription charges or anything renewable with using it. I seem to remember a few years ago with other GPS systems you had to pay for the maps by subscription. I've read over the specs and couldn't find anything but I just wanted to be sure, can anyone let me know ?Posted by SimonNovember 17, 2004 Re: Europe Hi Barbara,
You can use TomTom Go anywhere, of course its usefulness depends on what maps are installed. As far as I know the GB maps, that come bundled if you're buying from UK, do contain the major roads for Europe. If you're doing extensive traveling in Europe you should probably get hold of the "Maps of Western Europe" add on though.

Europe Would like to travel abroad, and wondered if all that is said about this wonderful gadget, holds true for the rest of Europe. 3. Connect your TomTom to the mains and to your PC USB.

4. Click "My Computer" and open "Tom Tom Go"

5. Make sure you have both windows (TomTom Go and the zip contents) open side by side... then click and drag the following files from the Pocket GPS folder into the Tom Tom's Great- Britain -Map folder.

The 3 bitmap images ending in ...redlight.bmp, ...gatso.bmp and ...continental.bmp

    The 3 files ending ".ov2" ...redlight.ov2, ...gatso.ov2 and ...continental.ov2

8. Turn off the Tom Tom Go, remove the USB cable then turn it on again. The update will now be applied.

Speed Cameras ! Its worth EVERY penny...and you can download all the SPEED camera locations so that the TTG will give you a WARNING !!!!...have fun!Posted by MayorNovember 8, 2004 Tomtom Speed Cams I was up and running in a matter of minutes with this wonderful machine. The best thing about it is that its so easy to use, just plug in and drive off. The little machine has a "points of interests" option, where, when selected can take you to the nearest cash point machine, petrol stations, hotels and lots more (preloaded). Now with the latest version you can download or swap POIs with other users, and would you know it some of those "canny users" had added speed cameras as one of their POI's and whenever they get within 200 yards a audable chime warns them of the offending camera. Now how good is that!!Posted by Mark JordanNovember 8, 2004 (tomtom) Go Get One! I've spent the last couple of years thinking about SatNav, which one, how much, fixed or portable, etc etc etc. Having an Ipaq, I was tempted to get the GPS kit but then saw the new TomTom Go.I bought it last saturday and have since drived around 800 miles. I can't believe how good it is! The screen is crystal-clear (there's also a 'night-vision' option to cut glare when its dark!), the voice commands are clear, the routing is spot-on, it fixes its position within 10 seconds from turning it on, calculates routes in seconds, calculates 're-routes' in seconds......and so on.The unit comes with a fixed mount and suction mount. I think the suction mount would pull my windscreen out before it fell off! It holds the unit perfectly and with a small attach/detach lever, its a breeze to use.Everything about this unit, in my opinion, is first rate - there isn't a single thing I would change about it!Fantastic piece of kit!Posted by Steve-dslNovember 8, 2004 Re:additional Costs Depending on the brand and size SD Cards start at around 15 quid. But! You don't need to buy a memory card to use this. It comes with a 128Mb Memory card in the box. Posted by DaveNovember 7, 2004 Additional Costs? I'm assuming I'll need a memory card to use this. How much will this set me back?Posted by MichaelNovember 7, 2004 Re: Mac Support You don't need a PC or a Mac to use TomTom Go. It's biggest selling point is that it works without any other kit. However, PC users can plug it in and manage their maps etc. If you're using OSX Get hold of TamTam - "Using TamTam, Mac users can manage their maps, upload voice tones, and create a backup of the entire system on their Macs."Posted by RichNovember 4, 2004 Mac Support Will this work on a Mac? Posted by DanNovember 4, 2004 Pros And Cons Bought one of these a month ago for over 500 quid! Price is so low now I've just bought another for the wife.
Pros : Does everything you need in a GPS device. It has all the features (and more) of the more expensive units out there. Cons : It should play DVDs too ;)

Re: Tomtom Car Navigator Pros. The Tomtom has got to be the best all in one GPS unit around. Ease of use and navigation. Good reception with built in antenna. It's perfect. I don't know of any other that packs so much in. Oh and it's bloody cheap!Posted by DaveOctober 19, 2004 Tomtom Car Navigator Whats the verdict with the Tom Tom Go? Pros and Cons? I'm a In car satellite navigation novice. ThanksPosted by Gps NoviceOctober 18, 2004 Re: Tom Tom Go Sd Card Memory TomTom's SD cards hold the map data. It'll come bundled with one for your region. SD cards can hold as much as 1GB which ideal for big maps. Not sure if you can save journeys to it too. Posted by KingpinOctober 12, 2004 Re : Tom Tom Navigator Questions The TomTom is really sleek in terms of design. It looks like a mini iMac. Yes it speaks! There's around 11 preinstalled voices to choose from including a British accent.Posted by BartOctober 12, 2004 Tom Tom Navigator Questions I really love the look of the Tom Tom but have a few questions. What's the memory card slot for and Does this thing speak in an american accent?Posted by DaveOctober 12, 2004
